A.Ramachandran |
A.Ramachandran is the one of the finest painters that India has ever produced. Born in Kerala in 1935, Ramachandran studied art in Santiniketan under the legendary guru Ramkinkar Baij. A scholar in Malayalam literature, an accomplished Carnatic musician and a research scholar Ramachandran is deemed to be one of the ‘invaluable’ painters in India.
Ramachandran came to Delhi after his studies in Santiniketan and joined the Fine Arts Faculty at Jamia Millia Islamia. He took voluntary retirement in 1992 and involved himself completely in art. His early paintings show the angst of the artist as a young man through a kind of dark Expressionism. Later during the 1980s he entered matured phase when he did his magnum opus ‘Yayati’. An avid researcher and traveler, Ramachandran has achieved another magnificent feat by documenting the mural traditions of India.
The innumerable sketches and watercolours that Ramachandran has done during his endless travels in the rural parts of India have now become precious documents of his artistic life.
Ramachandran’s latest series of three paintings (all diptychs) ‘Lotus Pond’ (Lotus Pond in three stages of day- morning, noon and twilight- seen through an impressionist eye) and a set of sculptures depicting the ‘Game of Life’ (A dialogue between the mythical Gandhari and Kunti from the epic Mahabharata) will be mounted in a prestigious exhibition by Vadehra Art Gallery soon.
