Kya Tum Ho at the Trivandrum Film Festival

'Kya Tum Ho' produced by the well known artist Chintan Upadhyay has been selected for the 11th International Film Festival of Kerala. The world premier of Kya Tum Ho will take place on 10th December as a part of the festival. Directed by Anish S.Ahluwalia, this film deals with three protagonists who try to transcend their ordinary lives through internet chatting. In the cyber space they find their escape route, solace and happiness. They shocked out of their happiness when they realize that their lives are intricately connected to eachother.

Mega Benod Bihari Mukherjee retrospective at NGMA

National Gallery of Modern Art will pay tribute to the memory of the doyen of Indian Modern Art, Benod Bihari Mukherjee in a mega retrospective slated to open in the last week of December, 2006 at the NGMA, New Delhi. Curated by the veteran artist Gulam Mohammed Sheikh and art historian R.Sivakumar, this retrospective will present around 400 works of the master. The works are collected from the NGMA collection, Santiniketan and private collections. The show is proposed to travel in two other centres, namely Mumbai and Kolkatta. “We have been working on this project for the last few years and we hope the exhibition would generate a lot of interest,” Sivakumar told artconcerns.com. A set of publications would supplement the retrospective that include a complete monograph like catalogue and an exhibition catalogue, limited edition prints, post cards, reproduction of the master’s works, scrolls etc.

LaVa comes to Kochi

Bose Krishnamachari's latest traveling installation project 'LaVa' (Laboratory of Visual Arts) will be opening on 16th December 2006 at Kashi Art Gallery, Kochi. Inaugurated in August this yearat the Museum Gallery in Mumbai, LaVa has traveled to Bangalore and Kolkatta. After Kochi LaVa will travel to New Delhi.
 

‘Bronze’ opens in Delhi and auction dates declared

A prestigious sculpture show titled ‘Bronze’ curated by Madan Lal and presented by Gallery Espace opened in the Lalit Kala Akademy on 28 November 2006. The exhibition features thirty five sculptors from all over India. Historically important sculptures by Ram Kinker Baij, Pradosh Dasgupta, Sankho Chaudhuri, Somanath Hore and Meera Mukherjee are also presented.

To mark the occasion of the show an auction of the sculptures by Laxma Goud, Sarbari Roy Chowdhury and Madan Lal will be held on 2nd and 3rd December. National news channel CNN-IBN collaborates with Gallery Espace to conduct the auction and the auction will be telecasted live in CNN-IBN.

 

Auto Hanger sets a new example

Mumbai’s prominent Mercedes Benz dealers, Auto Hanger, located at Prabhadevi sets a new example by opening its premises for mounting art exhibitions. The first show in Auto Hanger was inaugurated in a well attended function on 25th November 2006. “Indian art is one of the major happening things in the world now and it is a pleasure for us to be a part of it,” Jaysinh Mariwala, Chairman of Auto Hanger told www.artconcerns.com correspondent in Mumbai.

Auto Hanger has a strong clientele and it has decided to introduce them to the world of art. Kerala based gallery, Open Eyed Dreams collaborated with Auto Hanger to put up the first show. Mariwala does not have plans to function like a normal gallery. “Instead, we would be putting up shows, which have the best artists of India,” he said. The first group show had fifteen artists, namely Alex Mathew, Anil Kumar, Aziz TM, Bhagyanathan, Jeevan Thomas, Joseph M. Varghese, Murali Cheeroth, E.H.Pushkin, Rajan M.Krishnan, Reji Arackal, N.N.Rimzon, Sosa Joseph, Sujith S.N, Vivek Vilasini and Zakkir Hussain. “Kerala artists have made their mark in the contemporary art scene. I wanted to bring them onto a same platform,” Mariwala justified the all Malayali show. Open Eyed Dreams director Dilip Narayanan, during the opening said that he would be collaborating with Auto Hanger to organize national level shows in future.

Kiki Smith and Atul Dodiya in conversation

Mumbai art crowd will have a rare chance to meet the internationally acclaimed American artist Kiki Smith on 16th December 2006. In a program organized jointly by the Mohile Parekh Centre for Visual Arts, Mumbai and Galerie Mirchandani & Stienreucke, Kiki Smith and the well known artist Atul Dodiya will exchange their views on art at the Little Theatre, NCPA. Venue: Little Theatre, NCPA, Date: 16 December 2006. Time: 4 pm. Admission: First come first serve basis.

 

Fast Futures: Asian Video Art

As a part of its on going discussion programs Mohile Parekh Centre for Visual Arts will present program on Asian Video Art on 15th December 2006 at the Little Theatre in NCPA Building, Mumbai. Noted curator Johan Pijnappel will present a paper titled ‘Fast Futures: Asian Video Art’. The presentation will be followed by a discussion. Venue: Little Theatre, NCPA, Mumbai. Time: 6.30 pm. Kashi Awards (KAVA 2) presented

Kochi based Kashi Art Gallery presented its second annual awards to three promising artists. In a function held at the Kashi Art Gallery, well known painter Rajan M. Krishnan presented the awards to the KAVA 2 winners namely Lavanya Mani, Varunika Saraf and Chinmoy Pramanik. Eminent artists from all over Kerala attended the function and an exhibition of the awardees was also inaugurated.

 

K.S. Radhakrishnan Sculpture at Santiniketan

Internationally acclaimed sculptor K.S.Radhakrishnan installed one of his site specific monumental sculptures at his alma mater Santiniketan. In a sculpture workshop organized by Kalabhavana, Santiniketan, Radhakrishnan decided to dedicate this sculpture for the memory of his master Ram Kinker Baij. This twelve feet tall sculpture shows Radhakrishnan’s protagonist Musui in an acrobatic position on the top of a column which is embossed with a lot of small migrating figures, which has of late become a signature style of the artist. “I owe a lot to Santiniketan and it is my tribute to this art institution and my master Ram Kinker Baij,” said Radhakrishnan.

 

Sakshi Gallery moves to a new address

Mumbai’s own Sakshi Gallery will be more accessible to the art lovers as it has decided to move to Colaba. The interim address is:  Sakshi Gallery, Synergy Foundation, Tanna House, Ground Floor 11 A, Nathalal Parekh Marg, Near Regal Cinema, Colaba, Mumbai-400001. Sakshi Gallery director Geeta Mehra said that the dates and details of exhibitions would be announced soon.


Bose Krishnamachari

A bio-documentary on Bose Krishnamachari

Young documentary film maker Ravi Sekhar will soon release his documentary on the illustrious artist Bose Krishnamachari. Ravi Sekhar has been travelling with Bose Krishnamachari and documenting his artistic activities for the last few years. “I hope, I will be able to release the picture by next year,” said Ravi Sekhar.

Twenty Five points Bose to improve State Akademies.

Bose Krishnamachari has formulated a 25 point program for improving the quality of functioning of the state Lalit Kala Akademies. Bose said that he formulated this program when he was invited by the Kerala Lalit Kala Akademy for a discussion on improvement of Akademies. “This is my wish list. But these could be used for the general betterment of all the state Lalit Kala Akademies,” Bose said. For the common good we publish his wish list:

    1. Redesign the existing gallery (ies).

    2. Invite architects who have excelled in renovating heritage sites and involve them in redesigning existing galleries.

    3. For maintaining quality appoint a quality control committee or special jury to select exhibitions.

    4. Organize at least three curated shows in a year.

    5. Fix fortnight duration for each show in the gallery.

    6. Make the galleries function as a museum of contemporary art also.

    7. Ask the respective governments to allot centrally locate plots to establish contemporary museums.

    8. Involve international architects to design contemporary museums.

    9. Build up archival sections and entertainment corners.

    10. Avoid art camps and instead organize national and international symposiums.

    11. Invite and commission prominent artists to make public site specific works.

    12. Organize international Triennale.

    13. Organize fortnightly artists meetings along with lec-demos.

    14. Subscribe worthy art journals from all over the world.

    15. Build a collection of contemporary art.

    16. Send invitations to all important art institutions and organisations in India and abroad.

    17. Insure and ensure the security of the works exhibited in the galleries.

    18. Request the government to include art history as a part of the school curriculum.

    19. Organize quiz competitions on art in school level.

    20. Make young artists as the members of the committees.

    21. Invite student representatives from art colleges to be a part of the committees.

    22. Improve the quality of publications.

    23. Keep the galleries open till 8.30 pm.

    24. Educate the academy staff on art.

    25. Avoid asking people to remove shoes or keep silence in the galleries.
