The site-specific work carries with it cultural packages involving socio-political, economic, geographical, religious, genealogical, philosophical and historical concerns. The public art works will be made with the assistance of local residents and materials available on the site, both permanent and ephemeral ones, and will be installed at the site with the help of civic authorities.
Sandharbh (workshop) is a non profitable artist initiative, founded in 2002, by visual artist, Chintan Upadhyay. It seeks to augment interactions between the rural and the urban through art and culture interventions. The first workshop took place in Vagad, Rajasthan in 2003, (which is Chintan’s native place), in which the thrust was to create contemporary works of art in rural locales in order to enable the revival of forgotten creative community practices, to challenge notions of most Indian traditional arts being categorized as crafts. Once contemporary artists work outside the urban scenario, the so called ‘serious art crowd’, which is largely urban is forced to acknowledge alternative art practices, while also bringing in aspects of modernity to the rural people. Over the years, Sandarbh has been successful in creating art and social awareness in Vagad and its adjoining areas; It has organized six-short duration site- specific international workshops and three one month residencies.
