Sakshi Gallery Moves to the Art District
From 19th February 2007, Sakshi will have a new address. Situated in the leafy tree lined avenue Nathalal Parekh Marg (Woodhouse Road) on the ground floor of an old quintessentially Colaba building with its own garden and portico. Sakshi Gallery will open with a group show of the artists with whom the gallery has had a long and abiding relationship, some of them, since its inception in 1984.
With this timely move, Sakshi will be located in the heart of what is fast becoming the "art district" of Mumbai with over 20 odd art galleries and design stores in the vicinity. Sakshi has always been at the helm of affairs with its pulse on the Indian art world; constantly reinventing and adapting to the demands of the ever-vibrant art scene and art practice.
Over the last 20 years, Sakshi Gallery has held exhibitions the world over: in Berlin, Hong Kong, New York and London, Singapore and also within India in Delhi, Baroda, Calcutta, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad.
The gallery has an art advisory section, an art lending library for corporate houses and undertakes large public commissions besides supporting students and young artists with scholarships.
The inaugural show features 52 artists from India, namely, Amit Ambalal, Amitava Das, Anandjit Ray, Anant Joshi, Anita Dube, Anjum Singh, Anupam Sud, Arunkumar H.G, Ashim Purkayastha, Bose Krishnamachari, Chintan Upadhyaya, Dhruv Mistry, Gargi Raina, Gulam Mohammed Sheikh, Gurusiddappa, Hema Upadhyaya, Jehangir Sabawala, Jitish Kallat, Justin Ponmany, K.G.Subramanyan, Krishen Khanna, Manisha Parekh, Manjit Bawa, Mithu Sen, N.S.Harsha, Nalini Malani, Narendra Yadav, Navjot, Nicola Druvasula, Nilima Sheikh, Paramjit Singh, Prabhavati Meppayil, Prantik, Rajeswara Rao, Ravi Shah, Ravinder Reddy, Reena Kallat, Rekha Rodwittiya, Riyas Komu, Sachin Karne, Shibu Natesan, Shilpa Gupta, Sojwal Samant, Sudhir Patwardhan, Sumedh Rajendran, Surendran Nair, Sunil Gawde, T.V.Santhosh, Valay Shende, Vasudha Thozhur and Vivan Sundaram. The show will be on view till 24th February 2007.
Slice of Art from India at RL Fine Arts, New York

RL Fine Arts and Hacienda Gallery present 'A Slice of Art from India' curated by Jasmine Shah Varma. It features paintings by Alok Bal, Gayatri Gamuz, Kim Kyoungae, Sharmi Chowdhury and Shruti Nelson. The exhibition will be held from February 15 - March 10, 2007 at RL Fine Arts, New York.
Two artists from the group, Kim Kyoungae and Gayatri Gamuz have made India their base for more than a decade. While Kyoungae is from South Korea, Gayatri (born Inmaculada Gamuz) is from Spain. The other three artists are of Indian orgin and are based in Baroda, Gujarat. The artists in this group paint about widely relevant issues from a personal viewpoint rather than a generic social or political stand. In brief this collection is described as 'Of fantasy, escape and the everyday'. This exhibition celebrates the diversity in approach to painting currently seen in emerging contemporary Indian art.
Past Modern and Turmeric Earth Present Seven Young Artists
Baroda based Past Modern Gallery and Mumbai based Turmeric Earth Gallery together will present a group show of seven young artists at the Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai on 12th March 2007. Ajay Sharma, Bhupen Barman, Deepak Khatri, Maneesha Doshi, Pulak Sanpui, Swarupa Shah and Vinod Patel are the participating artists. The show will be on view till 18th March.
Bombay Art Gallery Presents Sunil Gupta
An exhibition of photographs by Sunil Gupta opened at the Bombay Art Gallery, Mumbai on 12the February 2007. Sunil Gupta, based in London and Delhi is a prominent activist, pedagogue and creative photographer. Gupta has been working on the Black Britain and Gay issues for the last three decades. Considered to be one of the best photography artist/activist from the South East Asia, Sunil Gupta has held a few solo shows in India. He has participated in several international shows. The show will be on view till 28th February 2007.
Shruti Nelson at Hacienda Gallery
Noted young artist Shruti Nelson’s solo show opens at Mumbai’s Hacienda Gallery on 16th February 2007. The latest works on paper and canvases will be presented in the show. The show will be on view till 24th February 2007.
Eka Gallery Kochi presents Six Contemporaries
Kochi based new gallery, Eka presents six young contemporaries in a group show slated to open on 16th February 2007. Baiju PK, Jaydeep RS, Manoj Vyloor, Shijo Jacob, AP Sunil and Tom J Vattakkuzhy are the participating artists. The show will be on till 10th March 2007.
Grosvenor Vadehra Presents Here and Now
As a part of the ongoing three part shows on Indian Contemporary Art, Grosvenor Vadehra Gallery presents ‘Here and Now’- Young Voices from India. The show opens on 15th February 2007 and on view till 11th March 2007. The participating artists are Jayashree Chakravarty, Minal Damani, Anju Dodiya, Atul Dodiya, Subodh Gupta, Owais Husain, Rajnish Kaur Bharti Kher, Valsan Koorma Kolleri, Bari Kumar, Chitravanu Mazumdar, Shibu Natesan, Prajakta Palav, Jaganath Panda, Pranati Panda, Manisha Parekh, Baiju Parthan, Prajakta Potnis, Sumedh Rajendran, Ravinder Reddy, T V Santosh, Mithu Sen, Anjum Singh, Praneet Soi, Dilip Sur, Vasundhara Tewari Broota, Chintan Upadhyay and Hema Upadhyay. The highlighted artists would participate in the opening ceremony of the show in London.
Contemporary Indian Art- A Discussion
As a part of the Here and Now show in Grosvenor Gallery, London, young curator and writer Diksha Nath will conduct a Q and A session with the audience and artists on 16th February 2007. The session will deal with the state of the Indian contemporary art. Deeksha Nath is an art historian and an independent curator. She has studied at the M.S.U., Baroda, and at the City University, London, and has worked at the Tate Gallery London, and at the NGMA, New Delhi. Nath edits an online journal, www.craftrevivaltrust.org, and is currently working on a book on hand- block printing practices from Bagh, Madhya Pradesh. She has documented the Ramlila for a proposal that recently led to the performance-form getting recognition from the UNESCO as an "intangible heritage of humanity".
Kashi presents Panchtantra
Kochi based Kashi Art Gallery presents a group show titled ‘Panchatantra’. The show opens on 17th February 2007. The participating artists are Hema Upadhyaya, Sheetal Ghattani, Sosa Joseph, Sunoj D and Vivek Vilasini. The show will be on view till 4th March 2007.
When Revolt Being Showcased at Alliance Francaise de Trivandrum
A group show of four artists namely Sujith KS, Manu Binny George, Senn PS, Suresh P will be opened at the Alliance Francaise de Trivandrum on 20th February 2007. Titled ‘When Revolt Being Showcased’, this show will be inaugurated by the noted sculptor N.N.Rimzon.
KCS Panicker Memorial Lecture at Thrissur
Late KCS Panicker, the pioneer of Neo-Tantric Art in India will be commemorated on 22nd February 2007 at Lalit Kala Akademy Hall, Thrissur, Kerala. Prof.Sivakumar will deliver the commemorative lecture.
CK.Rajan selected for Documenta XII
Hyderabad based artist CK Rajan is selected for the Documenta XII, Germany. C.K.Rajan studied painting in MS University, Baroda and did his advanced studies at the Hyderabad University. Hailing from Kerala CK Rajan has done several solo shows of cutting edge work. His recent portraits of popular films stars on flex board have got critical accolades.
