Open Eyed Dreams Gallery in Kochi

Kochi, the art hub of Kerala will have a new gallery in July with the inauguration of Open Eyed Dreams Gallery on 19th July 2007. Equipped with modern lighting facilities, huge display areas and parking lot, OED Gallery will be one of the major art attractions in Kochi. Located at near the Durbar Hall at the heart of the city, OED is established at the second floor of the Old IMA building in Warrium Road. ‘The Double’ a group show of fifteen young artists, curated by JohnyML will be the inaugural show of OED. more details »

Right to Home for Tibetan Children

‘Right to Home’, a public interactive project conceptualized by Koumudi Patil of IIT, Kanpur will take place in Ladakh from 7th- 16 July 2007. During these ten days Koumudi Patil and a team of three art professionals, Jyoti Patil (Video Artist), Anil Dayanand (artist), T.Subbramanyan (Designer, IIT Kanpur) will work with 50 Tibetan refugee school children in Ladakh. The project takes place at the Tibetan Village School, Choglamsar, Leh. Participating children will be encouraged to produce art works as a mode of communication and a medium to voice their demands and rights. Issues pertaining to art, architecture, film, advertisement etc will be addressed in the workshop. The whole project will be documented through still and video recordings and they will be made available to the mainstream public. Koumudi Patil, a painter trained at Santiniketan has been involved in public art projects for the last few years. She is faculty member at the IIT, Kanpur.

Jayashree Chakravarty at Bodhi, New York

‘Where the Sand Meets the Sky’, a solo exhibition of the noted painter Jayashree Chakravarty opened at the Bodhi Art Gallery, New York on 27th June 2007. The show will be on till 31st July 2007.

Crazy Stills by Dileep Sharma

The latest solo show of Dileep Sharma titled ‘Crazy Stills’ will be inaugurated on 8th July 2007 at The Gallery in Cork Street, London. The show is presented by Visual Art and Marwar. The show will be on till 14th July 2007.

Chemould says Farewell to Jehangir First Floor

From 28th July 2007, Chemould Gallery, Mumbai will be functioning in only from the new gallery at the Prescott Road. To mark the event of saying good bye the galley has organized a show of the traditional Warli painter Jivya Soma Mashe and his son Balu on 17th July 2007. The show will be on till 28th July 2007.

It was Gallery Chemould which put Warli Paintings on the art scene of Bombay.   The late Bhaskar Kulkarni discovered this folk art-form and cultivated Jivya Soma Mashe, then an over-seer of grass lands, as a master craftsman.

Jivya's first exhibition at the gallery was in 1975.  In 1985 Chemould Publications produced the book, "The Warlis: Tribal Paintings & Legends" which made Jivya's work known internationally.  His first exhibition abroad was in Palais de Menton, France in 1976.  Subsequently he showed at Pompidou Centre, Paris in 1989.  More recently Jivya has had a two person show with Richard Long in Germany & France in 2003 and 2006 respectively.

Tentua Dabaa Do in Jaipur

Chintan Upadhyay’s latest solo project ‘Tentua Dabaa Do-2007’ will open on Jaipur’s Jawahar Kalakendra on 27th July 2007. The show will be on for a month. Chintan makes a major shift from his recognized style in the new set of paintings to be displayed in this solo exhibition.

Relics Of Grey: Archana Hande

Relics of Grey, an installation with photographs, objects, paintings and video by Archana Hande will be presented at the Chemould Prescott Road, Mumbai from 5th July 2007- 4th August 2007.
Archana Hande’s artwork and creative practice has always extended into diverse modes, venues, concerns and forms. She has with ease slipped into the intersecting roles of activist, facilitator, interventionist, and maker all wrapped into one. Her interests have led her to draw upon a variety of resources, her projects having often taken-on an involved collaborative spirit. In her current exhibition at Chemould Prescott Road, Hande will present her year-and-a-half long project that culminated in the production of 3 large sculptural installations – White Town, Black Town &Grey Town.

Bodhi Award Show

The winners of Bodhi Award for the year 2006, Navin Chahande and Atul Mahajan will have their major two persons show at Bodhi Art Gallery, Lower Ground 1-5, Grand Mall, Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road, Gurgaon. The show opens on 4th July 2007 and will be on view till 4th August 2007.
